Newton Community Farm Summer Interns

Experience the beauty and bounty of Newton Community Farm and give summer a whole new meaning! Dig, plant, weed and water. Harvest farm fresh produce and prepare delicious snacks. Feed the chickens, collect eggs and explore the world through the lens of farming and food.

Registration is now OPEN for our full range of summer programs, including new additions for 2016. Register for one of our week long programs before March 1st to enjoy our Early Bird discount.

 

  • FARM SPROUTS (2.5yrs – entering K with a caregiver)

Engage your five senses and be amazed by the natural wonders of the farm. Feed the chickens, dig for worms, and journey with our honey bees as they buzz around the field. Munch your way through the different parts of plants and search for the colors of the rainbow. Explore, experience and be inspired.

Date and times: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday mornings, 10-11am. First class June 14th, last class August 26th. No classes on Mondays. This is a one day class.

Each week has its own theme which is repeated each morning that week. You can choose how many weeks you wish to attend, days can vary from one week to the next.

  • LITTLE DIGGERS (Entering Grades 1 – 2)

Unleash your inner sleuth and investigative powers as you identify the key players in the farm ecosystem, their roles and how they work together as a team. Plant, weed, rake and mound; harvest produce for scrumptious snacks and set up and manage a farm stand. Get dirty, have fun and be prepared to be amazed by what you uncover.

Dates and time: Week of July 11th – 15th, 8:30am – 12:30pm, week of July 18th – 22nd, 8:30am – 12:30pm, week of August 8th – 12th, 8:30am – 12:30pm

  • FARMER IN TRAINING (Entering Grades 3 -5)

Gain firsthand experience of the range of tasks, skills and challenges of growing food sustainably and develop a deeper understanding of just how much we rely on nature to nourish us. Enjoy harvesting, preparing and munching delicious snacks and setting up and managing a farm stand. Grow your appreciation of nature and all that it provides.

Dates and time: Week of August 1st – 5th, 8:30am – 12:30pm, week of August 8th – 12th, 8:30am – 12:30pm

  • YOUNG FARMERS (Entering Grades 6 -8)

How much do you know about the food you eat? Do you know where it was grown and how? Did the workers get a fair wage? And does it really matter? Take a closer look at the workings of our current food system and empower yourself with the knowledge to make informed decisions and choices regarding the food you buy and eat. Strengthen your skills and knowledge of farming through daily field work, harvest produce, prepare healthy snacks and set up and manage a farm stand.

Dates and time: Week of July 18th – 22nd, 8:30am – 12:30pm

  • FARMER IN TRAINING: FULL DAY (Entering Grades 3 -5)  NEW!

In this full day version of our Farmer in Training program, delve deeper into farm life and broaden your skills and understanding of what it means to be a farmer in 2016. Spend more time in the field planting, weeding and harvesting, play games and cook up some tasty delights in our Barn kitchen. Welcome a local chef, local artists, and other artisans as we learn new skills that are founded in nature and celebrate the beauty and bounty of the farm. Create a watercolor of the farm and learn the simplicity of making your own cheese. Engage your creative and imaginative mind and be amazed. Participants in this program need to bring a packed lunch each day.

Dates and time: Week of July 25th – 29th, 8:30am – 3pm

  • GLOBAL FARMER (Entering Grades 1 – 2 and Entering Grades 3 – 5) NEW!

Journey across the globe and discover a world of diverse foods, traditions, farms and markets. Terrace farming, chocolate growing, floating food markets, and breakfast traditions across the globe all await our exploration and investigation. Using multi -media resources we will connect with people near and far and even try our hand at some of their techniques and traditions here in Newton. Become a global explorer, dig in the learning garden, and harvest produce for tasty globally inspired snacks. This is an adventure not to be missed!
